Students played a math game today using patterning blocks. Let's watch Grace and Gabby explain how to play this game!

We used 100 charts today to create some growing and shrinking number patterns. We realized that seeing a pattern on a 100 chart sometimes makes it easier to figure out the pattern rule. Students worked with a partner to challenge each other to complete some patterns. The tricky part was stating the pattern rule. Remember that a pattern rule always begins with the number that you start with and then tells what happens next in a predictable way.
Example: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23... Pattern Rule: Start at 2. Add 3 each time. Partner reading is a great way to practise! Practise reading at home by partner reading. Take turns reading with your child by each reading a paragraph, or a page, or as characters in the story. It helps students with valuable reading practise and it helps students focus on text features. Today, students spent some time partner reading "Drumheller Dinosaur Dance". Ask your child to explain to you what this story was about...you might be surprised! We are beginning the year in Math with a unit on Patterning. Today, students worked together to create some patterns to share with the class. We discussed terms like:
We looked at some very interesting patterns that students created. Can you continue these patterns? What are the core of the repeating patterns?
We played patterning games on the laptops! Links to the games are below. You can play these at home too! http://kidcourses.com/grade-4-math-game-2-patterns-relationships-al/

We will have a lot of these throughout the year and the students had a lot of great suggestions to include on our chart. Then we practised having a small group discussion about a place we have visited in Canada. After, students shared what someone else shared in their group. Do you have many family discussions at home? Focus on some of these as you chat together!
Throughout this first week we have been focusing on our names. Thursday, students brought home a worksheet to complete at home that is due on Monday. It is ok to leave some areas blank if you don't know the answer. The link to the worksheet is below in case it has been misplaced. I have also included some links to websites that give us some fun information about our names! Have fun learning all about your name! ![]()

Hi, my name is Mrs. Merlo and I have been teaching for a number of years. It is a privilege to spend each and every day with such a wonderful group of children and colleagues.
