Today, students used nets to create skeletons of solids. They found out quickly that they had trouble build prisms. Ask your child what the problem was when building prisms and what they could do to solve the problem! Here is the Learning Goal and Success Criteria for the Courage Presentation. The students did a great job of presenting and showed a thorough understanding of what courage looks like! Our last part of the Geometry unit deals with solids. Students are busy learning about the faces, edges, and vertices of solids. Today, students created skeletons of solids using marshmallows and toothpicks. Ask your child what the marshmallows and toothpicks represent. Ask what they know about the faces of a cube, a rectangular prism, a triangular prism, a square-based pyramid, a triangular pyramid. Ask "What is the difference between a prism and a pyramid?"
The Scientists of 4M conducted their first experiment. They made a volcano explode! Ask your child to tell you the procedure for the experiment. Ask them to describe their observations and conclusions.
Fixed vs. Growth MindsetsA person with a fixed mindset believes that our intelligence is fixed. We are good at some things, not good at others. Someone is an expert in their field because they are talented in that area. We cannot change our intelligence.....it is what it is. We will celebrate our successes and not worry about what we cannot do. A person with a growth mindset believes that our intelligence can change. We are good at what we try and practise. Someone is an expert in their field because they worked hard, persevered, and practised. We can change our intelligence. We celebrate our successes and work harder at what we cannot already do. What kind of mindset do you have? Students are being challenged to develop a growth mindset. We are learning that some things are hard and require a lot of time and effort. Try focusing on this at home! Listen for those "fixed-mindset" moments and encourage your child, and yourselves, to take a different approach! Take the Quiz!Click on the image below to take a quiz to see what mindset you are and to find out more information!
Students were given a problem to solve in Math. They could choose to solve either of the following problems:
Here is the Learning Goal and Success Criteria for this activity.
Students worked with a partner to solve the problem. Check out some of our solutions and strategies!
Next, students created a "ShowMe" to solve an extending problem. Check out our work!
